So being a fitness trainer, aerial instructor, and dance performer I am ashamed to say that my flexibility is somewhat lacking. I am just not one of those lucky people who seem to be naturally inclined to be bendy. I think back to my early childhood and preteen years and I can remember all those gym classes in which we did stretching; I was (by far) the absolute worst in my class. It has only been recently (this year in fact) that I’ve been able to reach down and touch my toes in a forward bend.
There is really no excuse for it. I am strong, I’m in good shape, and I’m motivated to be the best gosh darn aerialist I am capable of. I just need to really commit to it. I need to stretch as often as possible; and I mean REALLY stretch. Not just hanging out and hoping that gravity will do all the work. I’m talking super uncomfortable, super aggravating, super long stretch sessions.
I am a very visual person, so I’ve decided to chart my progress with pictures. The following are images taken this morning after a quick warm-up.
Left and right split:
Back bends and bridges:
(Eeeep! Wow, really noticing how horrible my form is in back bends. Geez….)
And the Downward Dog…I still suck at this one.
I’m really going to commit to improving these basic stretches and poses over the next few weeks. Once I feel more confident with the basics, I will move on to the hard stuff. Here goes!
